This is a really interesting book. It's a best practices guide for Lego. It teaches how to plan and sculpt Lego like nothing I have read before. It's definitely not the type of book that you get with a Lego kit. There is also a reference section at the end of the book which covers all of the different types of Lego pieces, which is really handy. My reservation is that the book could have been larger. The author could have presented more examples to illustrate different types of Lego techniques. So if anything my four star rating is just my way of saying; more, more!

Brick


A brick is a ceramic block made of kiln-fired material, usually clay or ground shale. Clay bricks are formed in a mould (the soft mud method), or more frequently in commercial mass production by extruding clay through a Die (manufacturing)|die and then wire-cutting them to the proper size (the stiff mud process). Brick made from dampened clay must be formed in molds with a great deal of pressure, usually applied by a Hydraulics|hydraulic press. These bricks are known as hydraulic-pressed bricks, and have a dense surface which makes them highly resistant to weathering, and thus suitable for facing work. The shaped clay is then dried and fired to achieve the final, desired strength. In modern brickworks, this is usually done in a continuously fired kiln, in which the bricks move slowly through the kiln on conveyors, rails, or kiln cars to achieve consistent physical characteristics for all bricks.

Tungiasis


Tungiasis is a skin infestation of the ''chigoe flea|Tunga penetrans'' flea (also known as chigoe flea, jigger, nigua or sand flea), found in the tropical parts of Africa, Caribbean, Central and South America, and India. This disease is endemic in Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago where in the 1980s the prevalance of tungiasis among children approached 40%. It is rarely found outside these areas.The parasite|parasitic flea lives in soil and sand, and feeds intermittently on warm-blooded hosts such as humans, cattle, sheep, dogs, mice, and other animals. In order to reproduce, the female flea burrows head-first into the hosts' skin, often leaving the caudal tip of its abdomen visible through an orifice in a skin lesion. This orifice allows the chigoe flea to breathe while feeding on blood vessels in the cutaneous and subcutaneous dermal layer. In the next two weeks, the flea releases about 100 eggs through the orifice, which fall to the ground. The flea then dies and is sl! oughed by the host's skin. Within the next three to four days, the eggs hatch and mature into adult fleas within three to four weeks.

The Japanese Honeysuckle (''Lonicera japonica'') is a species of honeysuckle native to eastern Asia including Japan, Korea and northern China. It is a twining vine able to climb up to 10 m high or more in trees, with opposite, simple oval leaf|leaves 3-8 cm long, and sweetly scented double tongued flowers. The fruit is a globose dark blue berry 5-8 mm diameter containing numerous seeds.Japanese Honeysuckle is considered an invasive species|invasive exotic weed in the United States, and is classified as a noxious weed by the state of Illinois and New Zealand. Nonetheless, this species is still sold by American nurseries, often as the cultivar 'Hall's Prolific'. It is an effective groundcover, and does have pleasant, strong-smelling flowers, but the damage it does far outweighs any positive qualities. The only invasive exotics that compete with this plant for total damage done in the eastern United States are Kudzu and Multiflora rose.Honeysuckle can be controlled by cutting, flaming, or burning the plant to root level and repeating on two week increments until nutrient reserves in the roots are depleted. Honeysuckle can also be controlled through annual applications of glyphosate, or through grubbing if high labor and soil destruction are not of concern.The Japanese honeysuckle flower is of high medicinal value in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is used to dispel heat and remove toxins, including carbuncles, fevers, influenza and ulcers. It is, however, of cold and yin n! ature, and should not be taken by anyone with weak and "cold" digestive system.

The equity premium puzzle refers to the phenomenon that observed returns on stocks over the past century are higher, by approximately 6%, than returns on government bonds. Economists expect arbitrage opportunities would reduce the difference in returns on these two investment opportunities to reflect the risk premium investors demand to invest in relatively more risky stocks. The puzzle arises as the observed difference in returns implies an implausibly high level of risk aversion. To quantify the level of risk aversion implied, investors would have to be indifferent between a bet with a 50% chance of $50,000 or $100,000 and a certain payoff of $51,209.A large number of explanations for the puzzle have been proposed. These include a contention that the puzzle is a statistical illusion, others tweak the preferences of investors to account for the liquidity of stocks and some suggest market imperfections. Kocherlakota (1996) presents a detailed analysis of these explanations a! nd strongly concludes that the puzzle is real and that the fundamental puzzle, the excessively high implied level of risk aversion, remains unexplained.An alternative explanation for the puzzle has been proposed by Benartzi and Thaler (1995). Applying prospect theory they contend that myopia|myopic loss aversion provides a plausible solution to the puzzle. They assert that investors evaluate their portfolio in a relatively short sighted way and that, as loss aversion implies, they are highly sensitive to losses over this time period. The evaluation time period implied in their model by a 6% equity premium and a 2x loss aversion multiplier (a general finding of loss aversion research) is approximately one year. This explanation does seem consistent with the data and has not, to date, been rebutted.

New World Syndrome is a set of noncommunicable diseases brought on by consumption of junk food|rich food. Native American|Native Americans, the indigenous people of Oceania and perhaps other peoples of Asiatic origin are susceptible. It is characterized by obesity, heart disease, diabetes and shortened life span, and, of course, by a change from a traditional diet and exercise to a modern diet and a sedentary lifestyle.It is hypothesized that the syndrome has a genetic basis resulting from an enhanced ability to store fat. The reasoning is that a population stressed by famine would tend to develop this ability. Such a population, exposed to an abundance of rich food would then be at risk from conditions which are associated with obesity.Evidence found through the study of mitochondrial DNA suggests that there are several factors at play. Subjects of maternal descent from the above named indigenous populations have several genetic factors that provide more efficient conversi! on of some classes of carbohydrates into ATP. There is also indication that cellular responses to injury, muscular efficiency, and other metabolic differences may set the stage for other factors to cause the symptoms of the syndrome.Increased rates of depression are known to produce higher rates of obesity through decreased physical activity. Coupled with a more efficient metabolism this could be a major cause of NWS symptoms within population groups of e.g. native American descent. As with all studies of the genetic underpinnings of anthropologically diverse groups, the individual circumstances may differ from case to case.

I bought all 3 games as they came out, but if you haven't even gotten one yet, I reccommend you pick this up, especially if you love FPS games. Allied Assault is a terrific single player and multiplayer game. The single player mission is pretty long with great graphics, sound, and some really awesome scenery. The sound of wind blowing, snow falling, dogs barking in the distance, and, well, everything is great about the game. the on-line side has many different modes of play (especially mods) and is exremely fun. It is still one of the top 5 games played on-line. Spearhead gives you more maps and skins, and a very good though short single player mission. Breakthrough is more of the same: Very good (but short) single player mission, more skins, more weapons, and more maps. There is also a very cool (at least i liked it) game mode call liberation where you get put in jail when you die and your remaining teammates try to free you until everyone from one team is dead. All in! all, you can't beat this for the price they are charging. An awesome deal.
